- W4285199276 abstract "Boron (B) is an essential element for higher plants, taken up via the roots mostly in the form of boric acid. In crop plants, the range of B concentration from essentiality to toxicity appears very narrow. High concentrations of B may occur naturally in the soil or groundwater or be added to the soil from mine tailings, fertilizers, or irrigation water, resulting in B toxicity in plants Crops, and even varieties within the same crop, differ in their ability to grow in soils with high levels of B. Boron excess symptoms are mainly observed in mature leaves of those plant species where B is essentially immobile into the phloem and it moves following the transpiration stream. Conversely, in sugar-alcohol translocating species, B is readily remobilized by the phloem flux via B-polyol complexes and accumulated principally in young tissues. Boron toxicity induces mainly necrosis in leaves, stems and malformations of fruits. Excessive B amounts into plants may cause severe impairments of physiological and biochemical processes. Photosynthesis is one of the main metabolic processes impaired by B excess, mainly by reducing photosynthetic rate (Pn), chlorophyll content, electron transport rate, CO2 assimilation, by impairing photosystem II (PSII) efficiency and by triggering the production of reactive oxygen species in the chloroplast. An approach to alleviating B toxicity in plants is to increase their physiological tolerance, including the enhancement of photosynthesis and the prevention of oxidative stress, by applying nutrient elements, plant growth regulators, vitamins and biostimulators." @default.
