- W4285222502 abstract "Microalgae are photosynthetic microorganisms that have shown potential to produce several bioproducts, such as lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins. In this context, the production of biofuels has gained prominence as a possible substitute for petroleum-derived fuels. However, knowledge regarding the mechanisms of carbohydrate accumulation and microalgae cultivation still represents a challenge for industrial-scale production, including the cost associated with the cultivation medium and harvesting techniques, as well as the conversion of the sugars into monosaccharides and fermentation by yeast/bacteria to obtain ethanol. Third-generation bioethanol appears as a good alternative to first- and second-generation bioethanol, not competing with food for arable land and clean water, and also having lower costs with the cellulose pretreatment (less recalcitrant carbohydrates/structural compounds) and hydrolysis steps (lower sugar complexity). However, it is necessary to induce cell metabolism to ensure the carbohydrate accumulation, which can be obtained with nutrient starvation/limitation, especially manipulating the nitrogen concentration in the medium. Wastewaters can decrease the costs with medium formulation in microalgae cultivation. Acid and enzymatic hydrolysis methods are the most used to convert the polysaccharides into fermentable sugars, but some concerns need to be investigated, such as the cost of these treatments and the presence of compounds that can affect the fermentation steps (salinity and inhibitors, mainly those from degradation processes). The fermentation step is important to evaluate the effect of these compounds (hydrolysis step) on microorganism activity. Pentose fermentation is also important to increase the ethanol yield." @default.
