The fertilizer intensive wheat cultivation, promoted during and post green revolution era has played an important role in increasing the yield levels and assuring food security but is also blamed for the damage it caused to the environment. Considering the concerns of resource sustainability and environmental safety, the focus of farming needs to be shifted in favour of responsible production systems to meet the food requirements of the increasing population within the boundaries of resource availability. For this to happen, understanding the status of fertilizer application is sine-qua-non. In this chapter, we examine the chemical fertilizer use in the case of wheat production both globally and in India. We first provide a brief overview of wheat production in the world and India, followed by the extent of fertilizer use. An attempt is made to highlight the regions where the intensity in fertilizer use for wheat production is comparatively higher. A brief discussion on the Indian fertilizer policies is given to contextualize the state of fertilizer use, and the possible pathways for the future." @default.
