- W4285236171 abstract "Neuropathic pain is a particularly refractory form of pain following SCI and is typically experienced at or below the neurological level of injury. SCI-related neuropathic pain has been associated with maladaptive neuroplastic changes in supraspinal regions of the central nervous system. Conceptually, SCI-related neuropathic pain can be understood as a deafferentation pain, similar to post-amputation phantom limb pain. Thus, similar non-pharmacological treatments such as visual illusory modalities incorporating movement of the lower extremities have been extended to clinical treatment applications for SCI-related neuropathic pain with some benefit. This chapter reviews the established lines of evidence, from the initial use of mirror therapy analogs to more advanced immersive, multisensory virtual reality (VR) walking modalities. Effective VR configurations and user experiential factors that may most effectively drive future lines of research are also discussed." @default.
