- W4285244986 abstract "Application of low doses of carbon monoxide selectively at biological targets has been shown to elicit salutary effects. Metal carbonyl complexes have been shown to be very convenient as CO delivery agents in hospital settings. Photoactive carbonyl complexes have additional advantage in this regard since they could be triggered with light on demand. Research in our and others' laboratory has shown that manganese carbonyl complexes bearing the fac-{Mn(CO)3} moiety can be synthesized on the basis of smart design to systematically produce biocompatible CO donors that exhibit sensitivity to visible/NIR light, solubility in water, trackability in cellular matrices, easy permeability through cellular membranes, and ease with which they can be incorporated in various delivery platforms suitable for specific drug use. Results of extensive in vitro experiments with these photoactive prodrugs (CO is the actual drug) provide convincing examples of biomedical applications of inorganic photochemistry. In addition, these complexes could significantly expand the potential of photopharmacology, an emerging field in which light is used to remotely control the activity of pharmaceuticals." @default.
