- W4285252026 abstract "As sustainability is put at the front of every communication strategy of almost any brand who would like to keep themselves relevant for the next decades or so, the trend to seek means on how much is achieved with respect to its three main pillars, environment, economy, and ethics, continues. Now bounded by the Sustainability Development Goals for this decade, brands continue to work alongside with scientist to expedite ways to reinvent traditional operation models. Focused on the Fashion industry, who’s legacy of being a major contributor to waste, has seen a bright light to turning tables around. More specifically how it produces its product from clothes to accessories, by means of re-investing both time and resource on natural textiles. This abstract wishes to highlight opportunities found in interesting nations from Nigeria to the Philippines where respective countries’ rich natural diversity becomes an enabler to this feat. Take, for example, Nigeria. Who would have realized that the fashion industry would turn heads over to this nation, as it simply prides itself to a textile that is slowly finding its glory back, the ‘Tapa’? The material is a fibrous textile common in West Africa. As it is a traditional material, culture and tradition are attached to it. It is believed to be used to honor the Gods and as it is a delicate fabric, its connection to social classes is as well evident to date. Sindiso Khumalo—Sustainable textile designer and LVMH Prize Finalist 2020, is a clear feat that energy exemplified in the region toward such endeavor is not only making waves but are also clearly recognized by fashion houses, and that altogether speaks volumes on how such is a scalable initiative. Meantime in the east, the Philippines as one of the most bio-diverse countries in the world, is abundant in plants and the likes, which turn out to be an effective textile alternative. ‘Piña’ and ‘Abaca’ to name a few were once only used for traditional costumes and have found its perfect staging in the Fashion scene. Taken from the Pineapple fibers, ‘Piña’ is known to be stiff, translucent, lustrous, and expensive. It was favored among the affluent back in the day. On the other hand, ‘Abaca’, also referred to as, Manila Hemp is derived from the fibers of a banana species native to the Philippines. While the fiber is commonly used for paper and furniture, it is also popularly used in the fashion industry to create dresses, tops, and even accessories. It seems only fitting that the world follows the lead of these two nations or their contemporaries, as it is fitting for obvious reasons to proceed with fashion using the natural alternatives that are compact with sustainability rational. However, storytelling as well as a good angle to consider as it is an equally important component for Luxury and Fashion. On the luxury part these materials produced and developed by artisansremain strong contenders for exquisite quality while on the other side where story telling is vital, the historical past of these cited materials is incredibly astonishing. These traditional textiles align with the Philosophies of sustainable approach to textile best fit for the Fashion Industry." @default.
