- W4285255075 abstract "Quality water requirement is a global social problem. Water is available in abundance but not for direct use. It has been contaminated by industries and other waste generated by humans. There are certain guidelines to measure the pollution by contaminants in water by the United States Environment Protection Agency. Water pollutants are mainly organic and inorganic and other. Chemical and allied industries are the major contributors to wastewater. Due to various health hazards and toxic to animals, aquatic life, and others, it is essential to treat the wastewater. High standards of wastewater treatment are needed due to stringent environmental policies. This will force to treat and recover more water for reuse. The space and energy requirements are a major concern in developing efficient wastewater treatment technologies. Process intensification (PI) has been gaining a lot of importance because of providing potential innovative and more sustainable alternatives in the process industry and allied industry. The major benefits are cost reduction, more safety, reduced emission and footprints, reduced requirement of water and other raw material due to more efficient use of energy and water resources. The improvement in water and wastewater technologies can be possible by the implementation of PI approaches. The major concern in wastewater treatment is space and energy requirement, which can be resolved by PI. The present chapter presents the concept of sustainability and PI, various intensifying approaches such as membrane-based approaches, reactive separations, hybrid separations, hybrid advanced oxidation processes, photo-Fenton processes, and many other processes for wastewater treatment. Further, general discussion and conclusion have been presented based on available literature." @default.
