- W4285255623 abstract "Presently, deciphering how immune function builds and reliably maintains reproductive tissue structure and function, while providing effective immune tolerance and immune/inflammatory response following tissue injuries is a major objective in reproductive medicine. An important and exciting arm of this research area comprises studies on macrophages in the milieu of reproductive tissues, since this subset of mononuclear phagocytes is the most abundant immune cell type in mammalian gonads (testis and ovary) and other male and female reproductive tissues. Thinking about macrophages within the endocrine-dependent microenvironment of the reproductive tract is providing directions as to how these cells contribute to reproductive health and fertility, as well as uncovering endocrinological and urological manifestations of immune system imbalances. Here we review aspects of canonical and non-canonical functions of macrophages in the male and female reproductive tracts. In addition, we elaborate on their possible regulatory roles and involvement in reproductive pathogenesis that is driving new research and perspectives in the growing field of reproductive immunology." @default.
