- W4285266514 abstract "Traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) is a multifaceted condition, which hinders the patient’s mobility, independence, and quality of life. Following injury, vascular damage is a key mediator in a cascade of secondary pathologies that further exacerbates tissue loss and functional deficits. In the noninjured spinal cord, the spinal vasculature is crucial for the maintenance of oxygen and essential nutrients supply, while preventing the infiltration of toxic molecules and inflammatory cells. Following traumatic SCI, the compromised vasculature results in ischemia, hemorrhage, and infiltration of immune cells. While antiinflammatory regimens and inotropic support are widely used to attenuate secondary pathogenesis and cardiovascular complications, therapeutics aimed at restoring the spinal neurovasculature demonstrate great promise to both modulate the immune response and improve SCI recovery. Decades of research have elucidated the role of vascular cells in the immune response as well as scar formation, and have identified therapeutic targets to improve vascular pathology and enhance functional recovery post-SCI. However, these efforts are limited due to the incomplete understanding of the cellular mechanisms underlying SCI-induced vascular pathology. This chapter will survey the vascular and inflammatory responses to SCI and explore the recent advances in vascular-specific therapeutics." @default.
