Their presence in the aquatic environment is not easy to detect. It requires unique methods to study their diversity, population structure and ecological functions. Water-related fungi are named Phycomycetes, which is a functionally defined category, including True Fungi (Eumycota) and similarly developed fungal-like organisms Chromista (Oomycetes, Thraustochytrium). However, true fungi have a similar appearance, size and habitat. They are sometimes called water molds, and about 200 species are found in freshwater, mud and soil. Many of them are parasites or saprophytes. They are easily separated from the remains of plants, and little is known about their ecology. Real fungi are permeable in water; that is, they absorb nutrients through cell walls. They can go deep into the bottom layer, consume granular organic matter directly, and provide nutrients for development and reproduction.
