In this regard, during last years the chemical industry started implementing production models based upon the biorefinery concept. At this manufacturing sites, diversified biobased feedstocks are transformed into a variety of products including food, feed, biofuels, biobased chemicals, materials, and energy. Nowadays, many biorefineries are operating on a commercial scale; some under sponsored schemes in the manufacture of low-added value products (e.g., biofuels), some under large-scale production of consumer goods (e.g., oleochemical surfactants, biopolymers), and others under small-scale production of very high value-added products (e.g., therapeutic drugs). In addition to the existing ones, there are still a large number of biorefineries at the research or in the demonstration stages; all of them trying to overcome the issues that arise when working with biobased raw materials. Considering the higher costs of biomass feedstock, its heterogeneity, recalcitrance, high chemical functionality, and water content, the efficient pretreatment, physicochemical transformations, and downstream processing are major challenges. Therefore, process intensification appears as a promissory approach to overcome such issues, and some intensified technologies have been successfully integrated within existing biorefineries. In this regard, this work aims to describe past and current status of commercial scale biorefineries, and the driving forces that led to the implementation of intensified process in the production of biofuels and biobased chemicals. A revision of intensified technologies adopted in biorefining activities are presented, and challenges and future directions of such approach are discussed." @default.
