We argue that South Asia, particularly India, has witnessed conflicting structures like industrial capitalism originating from colonial modernity in the post-independent period. Notably, in the recent decades, the eastern regions of India have witnessed a rapid emergence of indigenous movements against state and private interests, which can be perceived from their strong ethos of environmentalism, as their struggles are rooted in protecting their community identity and seeking environmental justice. Within this context, this chapter draws upon Henri Lefebvre’s works, a French sociologist, to provide theoretical insights on two environmental justice movements of eastern India. It offers insights from the vantage of different justice domains and argues that every ecological space is socially produced in terms of specific social practices, and any space is not just a given entity that holds a setting. Thus, migration and displacement crises occur in indigenous societies when different space dimensions are not synched, and structural strain gets aggravated by the state–corporate nexus. Hence, the overlapping of the indigenous movements of eastern India can be located in the realm of spatial and environmental justice." @default.
