- W4285304734 abstract "China is the largest emerging market experiencing rapid growth but challenged by sustainability issues. Economic development and urbanization have tremendously improved living standards, but household food waste is becoming a growing environmental and social problem. This study explored demographic and psychological factors that influence urban household food waste. The analysis is based on food behaviour and responses from a sample of N = 475 primary grocery shoppers in Beijing, China. The results indicate that family income and household size are positively related to food waste, whereas education is associated with a higher intention to reduce food waste. A structural equation model reveals that attitude towards food waste, social norms, and health consciousness are positively related to the intention of reducing waste; a strong intention is associated with less food waste. The analyses further demonstrate that participants with better household food-related skills and fewer concerns over the risk of consuming leftover foods generally feel having more control over food-related activities—such perceived behavioural control links to a strong intention of reducing food waste. This study contributes to a better understanding of food waste behaviours in China. In addition to increasing environmental awareness, the findings of this study shed light on strategies and practical household issues to reduce food waste." @default.
