- W4285305666 abstract "By the end of the nineteenth century, humans have been fascinated by and drawn to mountains and mostly peaks had been climbed by numerous mountaineers. Some early mountaineers reported experiencing the symptoms now known as mountain sickness or “Hypobaric hypoxia”. Even today, many questions about the precise mechanism of altitude remain unanswered. Pulmonary and cerebral syndromes are a common clinical condition in unacclimatized people after a physical transformation at higher altitudes with millions of people travelling to high altitude each year. Acute mountain sickness (AMS) is a common syndrome that typically manifests itself several hours after the rise. Loss of appetite, dizziness, retching, sleep disruption, exhaustion, and drowsiness are classic causes of headache. At higher altitudes, sleep disturbances may become more severe, mental performance may suffer, and weight loss may occur. Certain medication including Acetazolamide and Ibuprofen can reduce the risk of developing AMS and can quickly relieve symptoms for the management of the potentially fatal conditions. The goal of this chapter is to provide a perspective for managing high altitude sicknesses and recommending the unacclimatized high altitude traveller by integrating a dialogue of risk factors associated, preventive measures, and potential treatments with a description of the rudimentary physiological functions to elevation hypoxia." @default.
