- W4285307586 abstract "The murder of the archbishop Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral (1170) after a long period of serious contrasts with the king Henry II Plantagenet deeply shocked Christendom. The topic of the education and duties of the good sovereign, peculiar to the specula principis (an ancient literary genre also cultivated in the Middle Ages), became then hotly relevant: the matter to which John of Salisbury had devoted quite a few thoughts in his Policraticus was resumed with a great variety of considerations in the Latin and vernacular texts subsequent to the brutal crime. In the successful Latin poem Alexandreis by Walter of Châtillon, the figure of Alexander is the perfect example of the ruinous fall to which haughtiness can lead even the most fortunate. In the rising vernacular literatures a complex meditation on the difficult relationship between the priest and the king, between spiritual authority and secular power, developed under the pleasant integumentum of fantastic and engaging adventure stories. A unique moral, obviously based on the Scriptures, stands out in the different texts produced from France to Spain, ranging from Chrétien de Troyes’ Erec et Enide - written shortly before the Becket’s murder - to the the Libro de Alexandre: Sapientia must govern all the sovereign’s actions (Per me reges regnant, Prov. 8, 15). The prince must be learned, but he cannot be the holder of wisdom: he will always have to rely on wise counselors, avoiding treacherous courtiers like the plague. And it is still the Bible that can enlighten him in choosing good advisers, as John of Salisbury had written, quoting the Levitic tribe of Deuteronomy and its clear symbolic meaning, corresponding to the main point of his theocratic conception of society." @default.
