- W4285331956 abstract "This chapter provides an exposition of the Bazigar, one of the representative ethnic communities of dholis. The Bazigar (also known as Goaar) were significant in supporting Indian Punjab’s folkloric programming, which in turn situated dhol in the position of representing Punjabi identity. A once-itinerant people historically concentrated in western Punjab, the Bazigar were composed of tribes that supplemented their income through ad hoc entertainment performances. The 1947 Partition compelled most Bazigars to migrate to eastern Punjab, to take up a settled lifestyle, and to adapt their skills to the burgeoning cultural heritage industry. Among the Bazigar dholis whose life trajectory was shaped by these developments was master Garib Dass, through whose biography one sees the status-raising possibilities afforded by dhol playing in mid-20th-century India." @default.
