- W4285332962 abstract "This chapter looks at the trajectories of Brazilian men who visited, studied in, or worked in the United States during the 1870s. From the perspective of visitors from the only remaining independent slave society in the Western world, the downfall of slavery and the triumph of free labor in the United States had opened opportunities for capitalists to multiply railroads, expand manufacturing, modernize agriculture, and build a powerful financial machinery. The Brazilians understood that free labor in the form of the wage system was the force quickly integrating a war-ravaged country and transforming it into a capitalist power. While celebrating wage labor, the enthusiasts of the Gilded Age overlooked flagrant problems affecting American society. It became clear then that antislavery reformers favored fast economic development and territorial integration over social justice and political equality. Hence, the post-emancipation United States, regardless of its iniquities, consolidated itself as a model of capitalist development for Brazil." @default.
