- W4285332977 abstract "Women in the workplace are an untapped resource, especially in the Middle East. As part of their initiatives to create and maintain a sustainable ecosystem, Gulf States have been striving to empower women and push them to take a more active role in the economy. Consequently, there has been a surge in the number of professional women who are taking up leadership positions in different institutions and corporations. Historically, leadership has been equated with the masculine and traditionally masculine traits such as task orientation, directness, aggressiveness, and so on. Despite the recent acceleration of the research in leadership language and gender, studies in the Middle East are scarce. This study attempts to discern and identify the most common leadership style of women in Bahrain. The main purpose is to present examples of good practice and showcase the ways women in Bahrain perform leadership successfully in different contexts in the midst of a climate of women empowerment initiatives. The study used a survey method which was distributed to 19 women leaders in the Education sector in Bahrain. It is based on Holmes’s (2006) leadership styles framework which posits that leaders normally range between two styles of leadership: transactional (goal-oriented) and relational (people-oriented). The study found that although participants claim that they lean more towards the transactional style of leadership, a closer look at the data revealed that they are orientated towards the wellbeing of their subordinates and would most likely use relational strategies that save face, share power and information, and maintain an amiable atmosphere in the workplace. The findings should serve to inform and inspire Bahraini women aspiring to become leaders in their disciplines on the linguistic repertoire and different strategies they can use to perform leadership successfully, taking in consideration their distinctive identity and culture." @default.
