- W4285368426 abstract "The Occupation of the Araucanía was a two-decades-long conflict over Indigenous-held territory in Chile that began in the 1860s and had consequences that extend to the present. This essay investigates representations of this conflict in the nineteenth-century periodical press. Drawing on newspapers published in Great Britain and Chile, we highlight gaps and contradictions in accounts of the occupation and emphasize the development of multivalent and polyvocal spaces within periodical literature. By illuminating how the discourses and development of the global North and South were intertwined, we reveal the periodical press’s contributions to an Indian imaginary and the rise of settler colonialism." @default.
