- W4285371010 abstract "Chapter nine tackles the historical normative discussion about how Islam should relate to music. However, the approach is new as this historical footnote particularly focuses on popular music. Popular music is emphasised as three different domains. The music of people, the music of taverns by professional entertainers of the people, and then, eventually, the popular music marketed for mass consumption. The chapter focuses on the first two aspects as the discussion of mass consumption music is covered in chapter four. To make sense of the many diverging opinions preserved in historical texts, the chapter divides discourse into four positions: the writings of i) the philosophers ii) court intellectuals iii) Sufis and iv) legal scholars. By analysing the internal logic of respective position, the diversity of opinions is explained. In the chapter, the thoughts of the likes of al-Farabi (d. 950), ibn ‘Abd Rabbihi (d. 940), al-Ghazzali (d. 1111), and ibn Abi al-Dunya (d. 894) are discussed." @default.
