This can be seen in the making of the Cuban ballet, <italic>Antes del alba</italic> (Before Dawn, 1947), performances of Afro-Cuban “folklore” in international festivals and Havana cabarets, and modern dance experiments at home and in African American Katherine Dunham’s company. By analysing exclusive ballet, exoticized folkloric spectacles, and elusive modern dance, this chapter traces how racial and class prejudices shaped emergent genre distinctions and professional possibilities before 1959. Across different venues, African-descended performers, albeit partially or fully excluded from certain dance spaces, continued to take centre stage whether in actuality or by haunting choreography, that is, by inspiring and leaving a lingering trace on performances." @default.
