It assesses the work and writings of Mainie Jellett whose abstract-cubist painting, <italic>Decoration</italic> caused indignation when shown in Dublin in 1923. Although initially greeted with suspicion, her pious version of abstract art increasingly appealed to the conservative tastes of the Irish middle classes. This sedate version of the modern movement was assimilated into the cultural horizons of those who were content with the stability which moderate nationalism and Catholicism had brought to Irish life. Having established an influential position in contemporary Irish culture, the work of these female artists was dismissed as derivative in the 1960s. The animosity towards what was now seen as a colonial and provincial tradition of Irish modernism intensified in the following years. The backlash was also gendered in its focus. It coincided with the Troubles which provoked a reassessment of the role of the artist in times of political strife. The latter confusion is exemplified by Micheal Farrell’s <italic>Madonna Irlanda, Ireland’s First Political Painting</italic> which encapsulates the conflicted attitude towards women in modern Ireland and its compounded relationship with the idea of the nation." @default.
