Critical obstruction of intrathoracic airway may be caused by either extraluminal compression by mediastinal mass or by intraluminal tracheobronchial tumors. Rupture of the extracranial common carotid and the internal carotid arteries or their major branches is an uncommon but life-threatening complication of head and neck cancer. Acute intestinal obstruction or perforation may be the first presentation of the surgical patient with colorectal cancer.
