- W4285594239 abstract "Photonics-based beamforming of an antenna array in the millimeter-wave band utilizing a radio-over-fiber (RoF) technique is described. The RF signals are transmitted through low loss optical fibers to a remote antenna array integrated with high-speed photodiodes. This innovative scheme is considered to be a useful new approach to be applied in future mobile communication networks, especially in higher frequency RF bands such as the millimeter-wave band. After the introduction of the basic concepts and operation principles of photonics-based remote antenna beamforming with the RoF technique, the detailed designs and fabrication methods used to realize such new beamforming schemes are described. The RF phases in the RoF signals are controlled by utilizing the chromatic dispersion characteristics of optical fibers. The design and fabrication of a 4 × 2 antenna array integrated with photodiodes; and its fundamental beamforming characteristics at 60 GHz, including digital signal transmission, are presented. A compact antenna module integrated with a photodiode is proposed in order to realize more flexible array patterns. It actually has been designed, fabricated, and tested. The various beam patterns created by a 1 × 8 antenna array are shown. The use of an optical variable delay line (VDL) has been demonstrated to prove that it is another effective method to control the RF phases of the RoF signals. A wavelength tunable semiconductor laser monolithically integrated with an electro-absorption modulator has been used to generate RoF signals. It is shown that it can be a practical light source. We briefly describe a method to estimate the direction of user equipment (UE), which is necessary for effective beamforming." @default.
