- W4285656492 abstract "This chapter examines how the language varieties used in Nottingham have been represented in dialect literature and literary dialect. These are varieties which for many years have been neglected within linguistic research. The chapter focuses on whether the dialect used by authors in fictional work is similar to the non-standard features described in dialect literature. Overall, findings show that there are clear correspondences between these two usages but that many traditional words and spellings are being lost over time. Despite this, local non-standard features remain an important way to symbolise local identity in literature. By comparing language in dialect literature and literary dialect we can chart the progress of enregisterment of certain linguistic features and how they are seen as being an integral part of such varieties and help authors place their characters as ‘local’." @default.
