- W4285686798 abstract "Jijwa-ri Site, formed and flourished from BCE 10 to 6 at an alluvial land, was significantly damaged by the flood, which overwhelmed the whole settlement in the third period. From the first period, houses at Jijwa-ri had been formed in the upper and lower areas demarcated separately. The lower area had been mostly occupied large or mid-sized houses forming a narrow and rectangular residential district typical for the early bronze age extended families. On the other hand, the upper area, surrounded by the waterways excavated at the rear wetland, had been occupied by small houses for nuclear families. Both areas show the tendency that 2~4 separable houses were gathered together to create a certain form of residence for the extended family, called multi-household family, and there were 2~4 separable residential districts in each area. The lower area had bigger residential districts and the greater number of houses than the lower. But it was also in the lower area that a huge house independent from multi-household families was first built in the second period whereas houses in the upper area continued to exist as the members of multi-household families until the end of this period. However, passing the third period where a huge flood occurred, the form of residence returned to that of the first period, and after then, the Jijwa-ri settlement has never built a single huge house but remained in the form of mid-sized or small houses for nuclear families differentiated from multi-household families. Due to this differentiation without integration, it could not have been developed into a chiefdom. Graves have been discovered only in the lower area: two on the southern side formed in the second period, one on the northern side in the fifth period. The first two are in a style typical for hunting-gathering culture with no burial goods excavated. The later is a sarcophagus tomb where stone swards and arrowheads have been discovered. It may also be because of the lack of chiefdom that more tombs could not have been built there. It is also assumed that the settlement communicated with Songjuk-ri Site, a foothold settlement 13km away to the south along the river. In the later periods, northern Chinese culture and Yayoi culture from Japan might also be flowed in." @default.
