- W4285780679 abstract "Sometimes when scholars discover similar iconographic types in both the domes- tic and the civic spheres, they tend to assume that the politically “lower” or less complex order is imitating the higher, and there are good parallels for this in other cultures, for example, the “democratization” of Pharaonic art and symbols by noblemen. In the Greek case, however, such arguments are often compromised by the fact that the “original” civic image is no longer extant and must be reconstructed from the domestic “imitations” or by the fact that the so-called imitations are so different from one another that it is impossible to imagine a single, authoritative model. Here I examine three cases of statues, which (I argue) were originally domestic guardians or talismans that at some point were copied in monumental form for use in the city: the rectilinear Athenian herm used as a threshold guardian, but said by the Greeks to have been invented by Hipparchus, the son of the ty- rant Peisistratus; the triple-bodied Hecate, also used as a threshold guardian, but said by Pausanias to have been invented by the sculptor Alcamenes for placement at the doorway of the Athenian Acropolis; and the so-called Praxiteleian Harpocrates, a standing figure of the god holding a cornucopia and other divine signa, that is said by some modern scholars to have been designed as a cult statue in Alexandria, Egypt. In each case I will show that the image originated as a popular form of amulet or talisman at the domestic level and was then imitated both upwards by the city, but also downwards by individuals, who in the late Hellenistic or Roman period begin to wear the image on their body for similar reasons." @default.
