- W42861256 abstract "From the Publisher:PC users have leveraged the Lotus 1-2-3 spread sheet into daily business routines for over a decade, and it is not uncommon to find PC hard drives with worksheet storage totaling 10, 50, even 100 megabytes. Managing this data, avoiding repetitious data entry, and tracking worksheet models containing thousands of hours of analyses is becoming unwieldy, if not impossible. PC shops and IS departments are working together and merging their technologies to build client/server systems to help manage large and growing databases. Lotus DataLens has shipped free with every copy of 1-2-3 (except 1-2-3 for DOS 2.x) since 1989. From the early dBASE III driver included with Release 3.0, to the new Release 2.1 for OS/2 drivers - IBM Database Manager (with DDCS/2 host links to DB2/2, DB2, SQL/DS, and OS/400), dBASE IV, ORACLE 7, Paradox, SQL Server - the DataLens family has grown and matured, providing 1-2-3 users with transparent access to corporate databases. This middleware component honors DBMS rules and conventions so that 1-2-3 clients interact harmoniously with server databases. How is this done? We show you how in this book which covers everything from the simple mechanics of getting external data into your spreadsheet (Section II), to a discussion of DBMS issues faced by IS and the PC community when implementing client/server systems (Section V). PC users will find it helpful to review querying techniques within 1-2-3 and read A Database Primer covering basic SQL statements.
