- W4286598140 abstract "Incorporation of nanometer length scale fillers to polymers is a well-known technique to augment the properties of the host polymer. These polymer nanocomposites, because of their unique set of properties, find applications in a variety of applications including material science, automobiles, defense, healthcare etc. Dispersion of such fillers, however, is a complex phenomenon and depends on several physical properties of the constituents and the mixing strategies. To this end, the understanding of the dispersion of different kinds of fillers in a variety of host polymers to establish the structure-property relationship is essential. This chapter focuses on the different aspects which affect the morphology of nanoparticle-based polymer composites as well as summarizes the recent advances. First, we discuss different filler types, namely layered silicates and carbon nanotubes, synthesis procedures of their composites and their applications. Next, we discuss the nanocomposites prepared using spherical or rod shaped fillers. In this section, we discuss the effect of several parameters including polymer to particle size ratio, effect of polymer coating on nanoparticles and single component polymer grafted systems. Then, we discuss the effect of various processing conditions such as use of solvent, application of shear, and use of external electrical or magnetic fields on the composites during their manufacturing. Lastly, we also focus on block-co-polymer based composites, where we discuss the effect of parameters such as size, shape, concentration, and polymer compatibility, on nanoparticle dispersion in the host block-co-polymers." @default.
