Due to the sessile nature of plants, they are compelled to expose themselves to different environmental vagaries such as salinity, drought, flooding, extreme temperatures, heavy metals, pollutants, and poor fertility at various stages of their life. Their impact on growth and development negatively affects crop productivity worldwide. However, the sessile plants have unique adaptation strategies to combat biotic and abiotic stress factors by altering genome, transcriptome, proteome, and metabolome. In-depth knowledge regarding these strategies is essential for enhancing plant productivity under the present scenario of unprecedented climatic vagaries. Omics refers to the study of genomics, metabolomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics which provide information regarding the complex interlinkages between genes, proteins, and metabolites of an individual because of its holistic approach. Functional genomics approach through gene expression studies identifies the genes and their products for a particular phenotype, which is valuable information for plant improvement. Generation of desirable phenotypes are now possible through adding or knocking down a gene with genome editing tools more quickly and precisely than traditional plant breeding. Transcriptome, which forms the complete set of RNA, carries the information for ribosome for protein synthesis. Omics technologies have the potential to significantly contribute toward the understanding of plant behavior under biotic stress factors and environmental vagaries. In addition to enhanced production, omic tools enables, quality improvement, nutritional value and better crop protection in lesser time. Plantation crops which include rubber, cocoa, and betelnut are important commercial crops which play a significant role in Indian economy in view of their export potential." @default.
