- W4288039378 abstract "Since first coming to the attention of archaeologists and art historians, Iroquoian smoking pipes adorned with animal effigies have invited difficulties with regard to classifying the species depicted and interpreting their symbolic content. In an effort to understand why this might be so, notions of “percept ambiguity” as defined by Mary Black are explored using ethnographic and historical texts along with an interrogation of the representationalist logics that frequently attend the study of these pipes. Through an emphasis on the substitutive properties of artworks, it is argued that the production and use of these objects adhered to a pragmatic logic that favored an understanding of animals by way of their presence effects. As conjoined instruments and images, it is suggested that these pipes facilitated interactions between humans and non-human (animal) others as part of relational ontology centered on power, knowledge, and blessings." @default.
