- W4288520797 abstract "The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a regulatory system that is fundamental in regulating multiple stages of brain development. Over the lifespan, the ECS is also implicated in the regulation of cognition, learning, memory, and movement. Whereas endocannabinoids are made “on demand” to maintain tightly controlled temporal and spatial signaling, exposure to exogenous cannabinoids results in sustained and indiscriminate ECS signaling. The teratogenicity of prenatal cannabis exposure is not well understood, though studies show evidence for fetal growth restriction and lower birth weight for gestational age. Two longitudinal studies, the Maternal Health Practices and Child Development Study and the Ottawa Prenatal Prospective Study, followed the children of mothers who used cannabis during pregnancy from infancy through adolescence. These studies showed changes in cognitive functioning in infancy (increased startle and irritability, sleep changes), as well as deficits in short-term memory, verbal reasoning, impulsivity, and sustained attention from childhood through adolescence. Cannabis use by adolescents and young adults prior to completion of neurodevelopment poses a second period of increased risk of the negative cognitive effects of cannabis use. Notable cognitive changes include complex attention, planning and sequencing ability, executive function and decision-making, processing speed, attention, abstract reasoning, working memory, and lower IQ.KeywordsAdolescentCannabisCognitive effectsEndocannabinoid system (ECS)NeurodevelopmentNeuroimagingPregnancyΔ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)" @default.
