- W4288775195 abstract "The linguistic scene in multicultural Singapore is, like in many multicultural societies, complex. Even though for decades the Singapore government has actively promoted the use of Standard English among the ethnically diverse Singaporeans, the dominant language used for everyday purposes, including speaking and writing in messengers, continues to be Singlish. To appreciate why Singlish is thriving despite government efforts to eradicate it, one needs to understand that a language is not merely a set of forms that can exist in a cultural vacuum; it is inevitably linked to the culture in which it is used. To examine the cultural setting of Singlish, this chapter surveys studies on Singaporean English by scholars of various persuasions and from a variety of perspectives, including historical, political, educational, sociological, formal, and cultural. It also reviews linguistic evidence, synthesizes findings, and discusses the key linguistic and cultural forces that shape Singlish, which have their roots in Southern Chinese languages, primarily Cantonese of the Yue (粤) family and Hokkien of the Southern Min (闽南) family, and their cultures." @default.
