- W4289277566 abstract "In the condition of low tip speed ratio occurring at a high wind speed, the blades of vertical axis wind turbine often bear severe fatigue aerodynamic loads due to the hysteresis effect of flow separation. Deformable trailing edge flap is a flow control method with rapid response and strong control ability to alter the aerodynamic characteristic of blades by deflecting to the suction surface or pressure surface. Thus, the flap is expected to reduce the fatigue load and even improve the aerodynamic efficiency of vertical axis wind turbine. Using a numerical simulation method based on the Computational Fluid Dynamics, the control effects of the deformable trailing edge flap with different deflection laws are studied based on a pitching airfoil used to represent the working state of the blades of vertical axis wind turbine. The results show that for the airfoil pitching with a large amplitude corresponding to the low tip speed ratio condition, the flap can reduce the normal force and make no significant reduction in the average of tangential force, which is helpful to reduce the fatigue load of vertical axis wind turbine. For airfoil pitching with a small amplitude corresponding to the high tip speed ratio condition, the flap can enhance the tangential force, which is helpful to increase the aerodynamic efficiency of vertical axis wind turbine. Based on a two-blade vertical axis wind turbine, a control strategy of the flap to reduce the normal force is proposed and the results show that the flap with a longer length reduces the normal force and makes no significant reduction in the average of tangential force, similar to that in the pitching airfoil." @default.
