- W4289718812 abstract "Antigonus was at the height of his power. He made his son Demetrius the joint ruler of Macedon. After the Chremonidean War, Athens effectively came under his direct control. The Spartans lay low, and the rest of the Peloponnesians remained under pro-Macedonian sole rulers or garrisons. Antigonus used his brother, Demetrius the Fair, for an abortive attempt to make trouble for Ptolemy in North Africa, and as a result of the battle of Andros effectively drove the Ptolemies out of the Aegean. But Antigonus’s nephew, Alexander, who was his viceroy in the Peloponnese, rebelled, taking Corinth with him. Corinth was vital for Antigonus’s control of Greece. Alexander’s assassination ended the war, and Antigonus recovered Corinth. But he held it only for two years. Aratus of Sicyon was now dominant in the Achaean Confederacy, and he took Corinth by a ruse in 243. Antigonus subsequently lost many of the Peloponnesian states to the Achaeans, and he allied himself with the Aetolians to try to stem the tide. Meanwhile, ties with Antiochus II were weakening. Sparta was in turmoil as Agis IV attempted to impose a raft of major reforms, designed to restore Sparta to its position as leader of the Peloponnese." @default.
