- W4289718836 abstract "This chapter presents Baudelaire as a poet of resistance, and under four headings: as contrarian, as artist and outlaw, as moralist, and as nomothete. It argues that for Baudelaire the role of the poet in society is essentially oppositional, an energetic contrariness that exposes the conformism and hypocrisy underlying contemporary public opinion. As a poet-artist, comparable with a painter such as Delacroix, he rejects the false constraints of prescriptive rule and normative fashion and theorizes art as deriving from individual temperament and an instinctive ‘innocence’ or novelty of vision, which nevertheless depends heavily on technical skill for its capture. Rejecting the antithetical objectives of didacticism and ‘Art for Art’s Sake’, Baudelaire looks nevertheless on poetry as a form of investigative moral discourse, and on the poet as a nomothete, articulating the nomoi (laws envisaged as simultaneously harmonic and moral) that govern the human condition." @default.
