- W4289718866 abstract "This chapter initiates a detailed account of Les Fleurs du Mal by first examining the two groupings of poems—provisionally entitled Les Lesbiennes and Les Limbes—out of which the collection eventually grew. After preliminary discussion of the thematic interrelationships between women, wine, and flowers, it proposes that in focusing on Lesbos Baudelaire is principally concerned with the melancholy of sexual desire (whatever its orientation). It further shows how he takes the poet Sappho and her female companions as representatives of a moral code radically different from the Christian doctrine of sin. Following analysis of the ‘innocent martyrdom’ of lust depicted in ‘Lesbos’ and other, associated poems later included in the section entitled ‘Fleurs du Mal’, it discusses those poems that Baudelaire subsequently intended to publish together as Les Limbes and in which melancholy is figured as a world of ‘non-difference’ and human life as a form of death." @default.
