- W4289718873 abstract "This chapter and Chapter 9 discuss the evolving ‘architecture’ of the first and second editions of Les Fleurs du Mal and examine in particular the changes made between 1857 and 1861 to the ‘beginnings’ and ‘endings’ of each edition. This chapter focuses on the poems from ‘Spleen et idéal’ that begin the collection in both editions (poems 1–20). It shows how in these poems Baudelaire dismantles the Romantic figure of the poet as divine lawgiver and celebrant of nature (‘Bénédiction’, ‘Le Soleil’, ‘Élévation’, ‘Correspondances’, ‘Les Phares’) and substitutes the ‘Poète [d’]aujourdhui’ (‘J’aime le souvenir de ces époques nues…’). This poet creates beauty (‘des beautés de langueur’) within a more sceptical, secular poetry that recognizes the realities of human melancholy (‘le Mal’) and writes as an alternative lawgiver who no longer lays down the law for others but, in ‘Au lecteur’, invites readers to feel, think, and imagine for themselves." @default.
