- W4289718911 abstract "The Conclusion summarizes how Baudelaire’s conception of beauty as an effect evolved into an ethos of conjecture. It discusses his view of beauty as a form of justice, and with particular reference to the opening paragraphs of Les Paradis artificiels. Defining lawgiving as the attempt to fit the apparently contingent into a pattern—to have a chaotic world make sense—it concludes the account of ‘the poet as alternative lawgiver’ by characterizing Baudelaire’s poet as one who invites his readers to become lawgivers themselves and to recast their habitual moral and intellectual perceptions of the business of living. The chapter ends by discussing the beauty of Baudelaire in the light of Seamus Heaney’s account of poetry as a form of ‘redress’, and concludes that Baudelaire considers beauty to be a force for moral good because it provokes us to re-imagine the world in a spirit of progressive and playful experiment." @default.
