- W4289755085 abstract "In this chapter, I argue that to understand Donald Trump’s appeal, we must situate his corrupt antics, and his authoritarian and illiberal politics within the ideology of workplace authoritarianism. According to the philosopher Elizabeth Anderson, “workplace authoritarianism” denotes the way legal changes in employment relations have resulted in managers and bosses holding near-absolute power in the workplace. I trace how this ideology generated socioeconomic conditions including the decline of unions and the growth of precarious, low-wage employment that disempowered workers and subsequently shaped Trump’s appeal to working-class conservative voters. At the same time, this ideology has crept into the state and is partly responsible for the U.S. president’s excessive and unchecked power. In its idealized form, workplace authoritarianism relies on an image of a benevolent boss; that idealized figure helped form Trump’s outward-facing presentation to the world and his character on his television show The Apprentice. Lurking beneath that image was the negative face of workplace authoritarianism: a dictatorial boss who regularly mistreated employees and avoided accountability while egregiously breaking the law. Ending corruption and restoring faith in democracy, this chapter concludes, requires implementing policies that improve workers’ lives and bring greater egalitarianism and democracy to the workplace." @default.
