- W4289778540 abstract "With the recent advances in nanomedicine, nanotechnology has developed a niche for itself as a promising option to improve healthcare via its unique ability to manipulate cell plasticity. Cell plasticity is defined as the ability of a cell to change its function or identity in response to environmental cues and has been observed in a variety of cell populations, ranging from pluripotent stem cells to even fully differentiated cells. Since cells naturally interact with each other on a nano-sized scale (1–100 nm), nanotechnology is well suited to manipulate and direct these interactions. In addition, both naturally occurring and man-made nanoscale systems can be functionalized in a variety of manners (e.g., conjugated with antibodies, layered with polymers, etc.) to improve their cell interactions, cell targeting, biocompatibility, or drug/cargo releasing properties, providing a wide array of possible nanoparticle formulations to be investigated by researchers. Thus, with these unique properties, nanotechnology provides a means to control and direct cell plasticity to promote advantageous outcomes in several medical applications such as disease (e.g., cancer, obesity) or injury (e.g., skin or bone damage) states.
