- W4289816306 abstract "Background and Aim: Hepatitis B surface antigen(HBsAg) positive individuals are frequently encountered in routine clinical practice while evaluating health related conditions or blood donation or during routine health check-up. We performed a prospective study to evaluate the modes of detection of hepatitis B virus(HBV) infection, contact history in the family, the awareness about HBV infection, and the prevalence of cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) among these HBV positive subjects. Methods: This study was conducted in consecutive individuals with HBV infection attending Gastroenterology OPD or hospitalised in Gastroenterology Department of MKCG Medical College between July 2020 and April 2022. The different phases of HBV infection and the plan for treatment were defined as per INASL recommendations. Results: 448 HBV positive subjects were enrolled and 77%(345) of them were male. Only 7.8%(35) HBV positive subjects were aware of the consequence of Hepatitis B virus, and 17(3.8%) of HBV positive subjects had history of discontinuation of antiviral treatment. Among the HBV positive subjects 61.8%(277) were detected while evaluating routine or other health related conditions or antenatal check-up, 26.3%(118) patients during the evaluation of liver related illness like jaundice, cirrhosis, or HCC, 6.3%(28) during family screening, and 5.6% 25) during blood or plasma donation. Among the patients with liver related illness 67.8%(80) had chronic liver disease (CLD), 22.9%(27) had only jaundice, and 10 patients (8.5%) had HCC at the time of hospitalisation. After complete evaluation, 35.7%(160) patients required antiviral treatment as per INASL recommendations. Conclusions: About one fourth patients had liver related disorders; like jaundice, CLD or HCC, and one tenth of these patients had HCC at the time of hospitalisation. Treatment with antiviral drug was needed in more than one third HBV infected patients. However, the awareness about the HBV infection related illness was insignificant among HBV positive subjects." @default.
