- W4289825906 abstract "This chapter draws on the field of Science and Technology Studies (STS) to conceptualize the relationship between architecture, neurodiversity and ethics. An important advantage of an STS-informed approach is that it encourages us to recognize the value of neuroscientific knowledge of human responses to the built environment while also avoiding the pitfalls of neuro-reductionism or neuro-essentialism. An STS-informed assemblage theory approach encourages us to understand the neurological system in terms of its remarkable dynamic sensitivity to various phenomena. The built environment, this chapter argues, has neuroethical relevance because it is dynamically entwinned with our neurological system, and thus our sense of self and our capacity for agency. It reflects social norms and values, including those that privilege neurotypical modes of existence, and it therefore participates in enabling and supporting people who approximate “typical” individuals, while disabling and constraining those who do not. When viewed through this STS-informed lens, architecture and the built environment are clearly important targets for neuroethical intervention. The chapter thus concludes by providing a description of general neuroethical interventions that can bring about environments that are more supportive and celebratory of neurodivergent modes of existence and expression. This includes interventions aimed at raising awareness of the neurotypical biases inherent in our built environment, recognizing the importance of including neurodivergent people's lived experiences in informing built environments, and activities, such as immersive art and theater, that explore the dynamic sensitivity of the neurological system." @default.
