- W4289884041 abstract "Domestic, industrial, and agricultural activities often produce wastewater, which can contaminate several lakes and rivers and lead to various waterborne diseases if left untreated. Organic pollutants such as proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, oils, resins, dyes, and petroleum-based products are the most prevalent pollutants found in wastewater, while inorganic pollutants include heavy metals, halides, oxyanions and cations, radioactive elements, and so on. Wastewater can be treated using a combination of physical, chemical, and biological processes and operations in traditional wastewater treatment. Traditional treatment methods have a number of issues, including high energy consumption, the need for trained labor, massive sludge production, and a significant infrastructure investment. Microorganisms have been discovered to be beneficial in wastewater treatment because they aid in the treatment and purification of wastewater, reducing its environmental impact. Microbial wastewater treatment has various advantages over traditional approaches, such as the need for less space, easier plant operator control, flexibility, and the ability to treat huge amounts of wastewater. This chapter discusses the numerous microorganisms engaged in wastewater treatment for different types of pollutants, factors affecting microbial degradation, and current challenges associated with their application in the field." @default.
