- W4290102212 abstract "This chapter explores the nature and effects of a range of chemical warfare agents. The role of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) is outlined, and the definitions of the various elements of chemical warfare agents or weapons are provided. The principles of hazard threat assessment are given and the classification of chemical weapons is provided. Pharmacological and toxicological characteristics are discussed for each chemical weapon specific examples of the use of chemical weapons are described historically and contemporaneously, many of these having had substantial media coverage, including attacks on individuals, and larger groups. The clinical presentations of exposure to different classes of chemical weapon are described, along with diagnostic aids and pathological hallmarks, to ensure that the principles of medical management of each can appropriately be applied. Therapies specific to each class of chemical weapon are discussed. The chapter is aimed to equip those unfamiliar with such agents, but who may encounter individuals in a healthcare setting, with the principles of identification, treatment and mitigation of effects and to ensure early and appropriate diversion to specialist teams." @default.
