- W4290694597 abstract "Severo Ochoa (1905–1993) was a Spanish-American biochemist whose work on nucleotide metabolism and synthesis and degradation of polyribonucleotides was of central importance to the experimental support of the role of RNA in the central dogma of molecular biology. Ochoa and his colleagues studied the role of phosphorylation of nucleotides, including the importance of phosphorylation in oxidative metabolism, work which led him and Marianne Grunberg-Manago to discover the important enzyme, polynucleotide phosphorylase. This enzyme catalyzed the polymerization of ribonucleotides into RNA, a discovery for which Ochoa received a Nobel prize in physiology or medicine in 1959. While this synthesis was not dependent on a template to specify the sequence of polymerization of the various individual ribonucleotides, and hence was not identified as the enzyme responsible for synthesis of biological RNA molecules, it was a useful tool to prepare homo- and mixed polymers as experimental reagents. In particular, the use of these polymers allowed Lengel, Speyer, and Ochoa (1961) to deduce the triplet genetic code by relating ribosome-catalyzed polypeptide synthesis to specific synthetic RNA polymers used to program the ribosomes. Ochoa was also an important leader in the development of academic biochemistry both in the United States and in his native Spain." @default.
