- W4290802206 abstract "Cloud environments are the most economical deployment solutions to either enterprise IT or telecommunication operators. Initially, softwarization and virtualization of applications are the key principles used by operators to reduce their capital expenses (CAPEX) and operational expenses (OPEX). However, the unprecedented evolution of cellular network technologies like 4G and 5G, and advanced Wi-Fi technologies has suddenly raised the huge number of subscribers and their variety of smart devices, and smart applications requirements. To handle the aforementioned issues, operators started deploying telecommunication clouds using network function virtualization (NFV) defined by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). NFV mainly focused on creating, managing, and provisioning virtual network functions (VNF) at all access levels. Besides, software-defined networking (SDN) complements NFV infrastructure for designing flexible, scalable, and programmable cloud environments. SDN mainly focuses on creating centrally manageable programmable networks with a centralized view of the underlying network. SDN achieves it by separating control plane tasks from network forwarding devices. In this chapter, we discuss the role of SDN in providing optimal traffic engineering, and management solutions for cloud environments. The importance of SDN- and NFV-enabled cloud environments is discussed with scenarios, such as network service chaining, which includes optimal placement of VNFs and scaling of VNFs. It also introduces novel architectures and important technologies for designing software-defined wireless networks, and telecommunication clouds. Finally, it concludes the necessity of SDN and NFV integration to enable Cloud-Fog-Edge computing environments, and 5G-enabled network slicing architectures for Internet of Things (IoT), and smart cities' applications." @default.
