- W4291135293 abstract "Clay minerals of the 2:1 group (T:O:T), which can exchange cations, have a wide range of industrial applications. These clay minerals belong to the class of smectites, which include the minerals montmorillonite, nontronite, and saponite. Their structures are formed by two-dimensional octahedral sheets (O) sandwiched between two tetrahedral sheets (T), building layers that are separated by intercalated hydrated cations and packed along the basal axis. The intercalated cations offset the negative charge generated when metal cations present in the tetrahedral and/or octahedral sheets are replaced by lower oxidation cations. Clay minerals attract substantial interest by researchers for industrial applications due to their plentiful availability, low cost, high aspect ratio, and high cation exchange capacity, among other important chemical and physical characteristics. These include the possibility of formulating Pickering emulsions, which is the main subject explored in the present chapter." @default.
