- W4291135687 abstract "Halophilic microorganisms are salt-loving microorganisms while halotolerant microorganisms grow both at high concentration of salt and without salt. Halophilic microorganisms live in saline environments and are isolated from saltern pans, saline lakes, salted fish, sea water, and salt deposits. Halophilic archaea have been reported from hypersaline habitats. Halophilic microorganisms develop the mechanism of osmoadaptation, wherein they accumulate potassium in the cell; accumulate organic osmolytes like amino acids and sugars to cope up with osmotic stress; and develop compatible solutes that help in stabilization of macromolecular structures and adapt cell proteins to high salinity. Biomolecules produced by halophiles are stable at varied iconic strength and as such many novel enzymes are produced using halophiles. Halophiles play an important role in bioremediation of saline soils and thus contribute to sustainability. India is blessed with a large coastal line (West coast of India), many saltern pans, salt deposits, salt lake of Sambhar, Rajasthan, Chilika lake, Orissa, and many more from where halophilic microorganisms have been reported by Indian researchers. They were explored for the production of exopolysaccharide, polyhydroxyalkanoate, carotenoid, bacteriorhodopsin, hydrolytic enzymes, and bioremediation of saline soils. Three novel genera and nine novel species of halophilic microorganisms become the contribution, new to Science from India." @default.
