We show that event distributions in seismic swarms can image stepping geometries reminiscent of relay zones commonly observed along fault zones. Earthquake migration can propagate across steps, indicating a transfer of deformation, but can be obstructed by others. Preliminary quantitative results show that whether a step transfers or blocks deformation depends on the separation between the bounding segments relative to the maximum magnitude of the events. These findings support the importance of understanding the role of internal fault geometry on seismicity and show that high accuracy event locations provide a critical understanding of seismicity. Keywords: fault step, relay zone, event migration, transfer of deformationPermalink: https://doi.org/10.1190/image2022-3738967.1FiguresReferencesRelatedDetails Second International Meeting for Applied Geoscience & EnergyISSN (print):1052-3812 ISSN (online):1949-4645Copyright: 2022 Pages: 3694 publication data© 2022 Published in electronic format with permission by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists and the American Association of Petroleum GeologistsPublisher:Society of Exploration Geophysicists HistoryPublished Online: 15 Aug 2022 CITATION INFORMATION Vincent Roche, Mirko van der Baan, and John Walsh, (2022), Examples of fault steps controlling event migration in seismic swarms, SEG Technical Program Expanded Abstracts : 3166-3169. https://doi.org/10.1190/image2022-3738967.1 Plain-Language Summary Keywordsfault steprelay zoneevent migrationtransfer of deformationPDF DownloadLoading ..." @default.
